How To Cleanse Your Body To Lose Weight (Part 1)

Today, I am gonna talk about how to cleanse your body to lose weight through detoxing.

I recently tried out a detox diet for about 10 days and to give you a holistic experience I have divided this article into two parts.

It not only motivated me to stay focused on the path to reach my goal weight but made me write an article about it so that I could motivate my readers to focus on a more healthy lifestyle.

So, let’s start at the beginning.

WHAT IS DETOXING?

Have you ever thought about why we see more people fall sick now than about 50 years ago? Why we hear about more and more diseases, illnesses now than there were earlier? 

Believe it or not, it is because of our fast-paced lives, the polluted air, water and food that we intake. Our reliance on processed and ready-to-eat frozen foods, high calorie, and high sugar addictive foods has made our digestive system to work overtime, affecting our digestion and immune system. 

Detoxing is a way to cleanse your body from unwanted, harmful substances called toxins that you may have consumed from the air, water, soil or food. Toxins may also be produced by the body. 

When at first I heard about this kind of a diet to lose weight, I was very skeptical, not because I won’t be able to do so but only because I would have to give up something so dear to me, the food that I was so used to eating on a regular basis.
That changed once I did my research and came across so many benefits of a body cleanse.

    This article focuses on the basics of how a detox works and how you can incorporate it into your lifestyle. I, too, was recommended to follow this diet by a Reebok certified gym instructor, diploma in Nutrition and Health Education by IGNOU, Arun Arora. 
  2. A detox diet may be beneficial to a majority of people but the following to avoid such body cleanse diet.
  • People who are diabetic.
  • People under the age of 18 and people above the age of 65
  • People suffering or recovering from an illness.
  • People on any kind of medication to first consult their doctors. 
  • Pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and women trying to get pregnant.

WHY SHOULD WE DETOX?

Once you start the detox procedure, you will start to feel the difference in yourself, both mentally and physically. 

In order to lose weight, I think the first step should be a gradual process of letting go of high-calorie food, food that will not serve your purpose of losing weight because nothing happens in an instance. That is why I believe a gradual detox is the best way to lose weight. 

After some time, you yourself will not crave your comfort foods the way you used to, everything you will consume will be in moderation, this, I speak from personal experience.

SOME GENERAL CONCERN AREAS

The first change that you will feel in yourself is feeling much lighter and more energetic.
A detox relieves you of stress, makes your skin glow. If you are prone to skin problems like acne, it takes care of that, too.
Your sleep cycle will improve drastically.
There is no scientific proof but it is said to decrease cellulite.
Takes care of your nails and hair.
Lastly, it, of course, helps you to lose weight. 

A detox is becoming increasingly important nowadays because nothing we consume today, is in its purest form unless we go for only organically produced fruits and vegetables.
The benefits I mentioned above were generalized and are some of the common reasons why one should detox but now we will discuss some specific issues that you can address through this body cleansing diet.

SOME SPECIFIC CONCERN AREAS

  1. Digestive problems like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). 
  2. Respiratory problems like a runny nose or congested sinuses. 
  3. Food addictions and severe cravings. 
  4. Skin problems like eczema, acne, rashes. 
  5. Pre Menstrual Syndrome. 
  6. Mood swings and depression.
  7. Lethargy 

This article is solely based on my personal experience with a detox diet and I can safely say that it helped me control my cravings, made me more inclined towards exercising, took care of my acne and rough skin and lastly, help me get rid of PMS. That is why, I suggest that women, in particular, should follow a weekend detox before their menstrual cycle begins.

Here are a few things you have to keep in mind before you start with a detox plan:

  1. Identify allergies

    Some of the above mentioned medical problems may also occur because of allergies and intolerances which need to be ruled out before you start detoxing.
    People may be allergic/intolerant to-
    a. Nuts
    b. shellfish
    c. gluten
    d.milk, other dairy products and so on.
    If you think you are suffering from any such allergy, please consult your family doctor and do not self-diagnose. A detox diet may help identify and rule out them but self-diagnosing is not the way to go.

  2. Clear your kitchen

    If you ask me, the reason behind my previous failed attempts at dieting was having access to all my comfort foods, to which I could resort to whenever I felt defeated but it wasn’t the case this time. The minute I decided to start the detox, I went to my pantry and cleared out everything that could hinder my schedule. While you’re at it, replace it with healthier options.

  3. Formulate a plan

    For a detox diet or any diet for that matter, you need to have a plan so that you don’t have to stress last minute when cooking your meals or realize that you don’t have a particular ingredient for that particular meal.
    Always look for alternatives. It is not possible to follow the said diet word for word, given that there can be last minute changes in your schedule- a sudden business meeting, impromptu plan with friends etc.

  4. Do your research.

    A little research never hurt anybody especially when it comes to one’s health. It will only expand your horizon and keep you open to more food and exercise options, keeping your diet plan exciting.

  5. Keep it steady.

    Most of us diet- takers face this common problem of gaining the lost weight very quickly after we stop with the diet. This is because we go back to our old routine instantly instead of doing it gradually. Take it slowly once you want to resume your old routine for steady and balanced results.
